"Sequoyah provided me all the opportunity in the world to explore my passion."
Jordan Wong
Jordan Alexis Wong’s high school days were filled with creativity and spontaneity. Her classwork was exemplary, her friends numerous, and her interests contagious. Through her work in computer graphics and her work in art classes, Jordan was known locally as an incredibly exciting art talent. The yearbook cover she designed for her final year had a quote on the back, “The Greatest Pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”
Beyond artistic triumphs, her speaking and presentation skills were honed through her days on the Speech and Debate teams. Her quick mind and agility with words were assets during debate. She was a gracious, poised, and delightful student in any classroom on campus. She and another notable student of the class of 2010, Sam Radley, were selected by the faculty to receive the Eagle Award.
What does an Eagle Award winner do after graduating from Sequoyah High School?
Jordan Wong’s academic career at Rogers State University was as dynamic as her years at Sequoyah High School. She interned with the Claremore Museum of History and Philbrook Museum of Art. She participated in RSU’s Studies-at-Large in Italy during the summber of 2012. One of Wong’s illustrations was the 2012 festival poster for the Art on the Hill festival at RSU.
Wong was the set designer for the RSU production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Her work on this project qualified her for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Shreveport, Louisiana. She received a scholarship through this competition that sent her to attend the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas, she studied light design with Luc Lafortune of Cirque du Soleil and participated in a 48-hour Design Charette. Based on her talent and hardwork Jordan or JaiWo, as she signs her art, received numerous scholarships and accolades. Wong was recently featured on “What’s Happening Tulsa,” a local production that brings focus the talent in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
Jordan Wong will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design on an Honors Scholarship. She will be pursuing an MFA in illustration. This prestigious program will be presenting Jordan with opportunities for travel and study around the world.
The quote Jordan and her classmates placed on the 2010 Sequoyah High School yearbook, “The Greatest Pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do,” was a challenge and a promise for Jordan Wong as she graduated from Sequoyah High School with talent and dreams that could not be denied.
In a recent note to me regarding her post high school challenges and successes, Jordan said, “Sequoyah provided me all the opportunity in the world to explore my passion. The amount of support and encouragement I received from my teachers was truly immeasurable, giving me the confidence to pursue my education. For this, I will always be grateful.”
