Science Course Description:

This course will continue to build the students knowledge of a variety of general science concepts in Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science. In this course students will have the opportunity to explore topics such as matter, atoms and bonding, thermal energy and heat, plants, animal life processes, controlling body processes, genetics, DNA, evolution, Earth, Moon and Sun, Solar system, atmosphere, weather and climate.  Students will participate in scientific inquiry, developing their critical thinking skills of observing, hypothesizing, experimenting and analyzing. Projects will require out of class time and preparation.

  4. Notebook paper
  5. Highlighter
  6. Composition book
  7. Assignments/ Homework

Textbook:

Elevate Science; 7th grade edition. Our textbooks are very similar to what your child used last year; they are designed and set up exactly the same.  These books are property of the school and one book will be assigned to each student for the school year. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with the book, if the student happens to lose/misplace or damage their book beyond repair, it will be your/their responsibility to replace the textbook. Textbooks are required to be left in the classroom (unless otherwise authorized by the teacher). Textbooks will be available online for any work that must be completed at home.

Major Course Requirements:

            Assignments:

Students will be provided class time to work on assignments assigned that day. Anything not finished by the end of the class period will be homework. Unless otherwise stated, all assignments will be due at the beginning of hour the following day. Projects may be assigned that will require some time out of class.

Science labs:

Students will participate and complete labs to enrich the information covered in class. These labs will    be graded as an assignment. Lab reports will be required for certain labs. (Directions and requirements     for a lab report will be given at that time). Students will not be permitted to participate in any lab until    safety rules and guidelines sheet has been signed by both the student and parent and returned to             school. Labs are a privilege and can be revoked if student’s behavior does not demonstrate maturity            and responsibility.

            Grading Scale:

                        A: 100%-90%

                        B: 89%-80%

                        C: 79%-70%

                        D: 69%-60%

                        F: 59% or below

            Classroom Expectations:

  1. Be respectful of others and their property. (Treat others as you want to be treated).
  2. Be prepared for class with all necessary tools. (Paper, pencil, book, homework and anything else you may need).
  3. Listen and follow directions the first time.
  4. Give others around you the chance to learn by not disrupting the teacher’s effort to teach.
  5. Do your best on ALL work and turn assignments in on time.

Makeup Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to ask for and collect all work that was missed due to an absence. A student will receive the same number of days he/she was absent plus one additional day to make up the work that was missed during an absence. Assignments, deadlines and tests that were announced prior to the date(s) the student was absent will be due upon the student’s return to school. All classwork and assignments will be available online in Google Classroom.

Late Work:

Late work will not be permitted or accepted for full credit. Work turned in 1 day late will be graded and receive 50% off. Work turned in 2 days late will be graded and receive 75% off.  Work turned in 3 days late will not be accepted or graded and student will receive a 0 for the assignment.

            Correct and Return:

Any assignment that was completed and turned in on time that received a failing grade (59% or below) is eligible for “Correct and Return”. Students have the opportunity to correct any incorrect answer on the original assignment. The assignment will be re-graded and an average score will be given: (original score + New score ÷ 2 = Average score). Correct and Return assignments must be corrected and returned with 1 week of the assignments original due date; after 1 week, assignments will not be re-graded.

Hall Passes:

            Students will be expected to come to class prepared with all necessary materials (book, pencil, red pen, highlighter, homework, etc.). Students will also be expected to take all necessary breaks (restroom, drink, locker, etc.) during the 5 minutes between classes. If students insist on leaving the room for an emergency, they will be given 3 hall passes each semester. Once the 3 hall passes have been used, each restroom break or locker visit will result in a day of detention.

No Supplies:

            Students are expected to come to class fully prepared with all necessary supplies to begin working after the tardy bell. Should students come to class unprepared, they will be sent to their locker to retrieve supplies/ assignments and will be forced to use one of their hall passes. If all hall passes have been used, they will be counted as tardy; tardy rule still applies.

Tardy:

Students will be expected to be in the classroom and in their seats when the bell rings. If students are not in their seats when the bell rings they will be marked as tardy. If a student receives 3 tardies, they will be given a day of detention.

            Behavior Paragraphs:

Behavior paragraphs may be issued to students as a means for classroom management; paragraphs are due by the beginning of the hour, the following day. If paragraphs are not complete, a day of detention will be issued. Each time student receives paragraphs, they double.

 

***Distant Learning:

If at any point during the school year we are encouraged to switch to Distant Learning or if a student must quarantine due to exposure or a positive Covid 19 test; Students will be able to access all daily classroom assignments and worksheets through Google Classroom. All assignments must be completed by a specific due date and will be graded accordingly. Students who do not complete daily assignments in a timely manner will be graded accordingly.
