Summer just always seems to fly by with all of the sunny weather and fun family experiences together. It is so exciting to be back in the school routine. I know we have some tears as kiddos come to school from time to time over the first few weeks. I assure you the students are having a great time once they are in the room. We believe whole heartedly in having fun while we learn. Open House is a great start to the year with making connections. It is definitely a packed house…with as many supportive families as we have attending.
Students can be walked to class on the first day of school (and a few days for PreK). Then our students should be walking themselves to class without any parents in the halls after the first day or two. We have lots of staff scattered outside and in our buildings to assist them to get to class. Safety is very important to us. Any visitors, including family members, must report to our receptionist’s office. We will not have visitors in the halls or cafeteria for safety. You will also need a photo ID, if the receptionist does not recognize you or if we have other concerns.
If you are dropping off your child you may begin this process at 8:00 a.m. NO students are allowed in the buildings before 8 am. You may see staff children or our Safety Patrol students entering early, but no other traditional students. If you are picking them up at the end of the day, then you must be in line by 3:15 pm. The first few weeks it takes a bit longer for our little ones and their families to learn the pick-up routine but will get faster as the days continue. Eventually, we are loading our last pick-up kiddo at 3:15 pm. Remember to not get out of your car, and to pull forward from the line and stop at the end of the parking lot, if you need to safely help your child buckle up. You can imagine how long we would be here if just 10 of our cars took an extra 2 minutes to buckle up while in line. For the safety of your child it is vital that you follow these times.
Any transportation changes must be written on a note, placed in the communication area of their folder/clear zip bag and given to your child’s teacher or you may call our office. Please understand we will not be able to make changes any other way. Students will not be allowed to verbally notify their teacher of changes. If you are calling to make a change you must notify our office staff by 1:45 p.m. We will not be able to make any changes after that time. Once we are at that time, I deliver the notes to the teachers. Safety is #1, and we cannot make last minute changes with approximately 650 elementary students and then to get where they need to be by 2:50 pm.
We will have some important safety drills throughout the school year. So, if your child(ren) tells you about such, then please know we are just practicing our safety in the rare chance of an emergency situation. These include drills such as, fire, tornado, lockdown (Quiet-Time Drill) and bus evacuation.
Please continue to check the calendar on our website and Facebook for upcoming events at Sequoyah Elementary or download our Sequoyah School app.
