“Sequoyah Schools helped me discover the power I have to impact the world around me."

Cadence Wong

Cadence Wong, or Cady, as she is better known by other Sequoyah Eagles who graduated in 2012, was one of six Valedictorians of her senior class.  She and another classmate, Brad Frederick, were voted “Most Likely to Succeed,” by her classmates.  Wong qualified as an Oklahoma Academic All-State Scholar.  Her resume at the time of her graduation from high school mentions French club, math club, work as a programmer, and a love for bicycling and collecting fun, colorful socks!

Cady Wong’s thoughts on her high school days, “Sequoyah Public Schools helped me discover the power, ingenuity, and tenacity I have to impact the world around me.  As equally important, it also taught me the humility, appreciation, and pride in the little community among millions of others that will always be a warm and welcome home no matter the distance apart.”

As a student, Cadence Wong was quietly dedicated to pursuing all her interests.  She excelled in so many areas and had numerous good friends.  When a student has so many skills and interests, it is very difficult to focus on a singular career path.  With such a variety of options after high school graduation, what did Cady have on her first summer out of high school agenda?

As you see in the picture, this is not downtown Claremore.  Cady Wong had worked through her high school senior year as a programmer for Yapanda Inc. Artificial Intelligence.  Her savings enabled her to take a ten-day trip to Japan (Picture 1)  after high school graduation.  She explored every district in Tokyo and feels that she merely scratched the surface of all that is offered to visitors of Tokyo.  However, this trip opened her eyes to the wider world of travel and adventure.

“Success” in only one field of study was not easily defined for Cady.  When she began her college days at Rogers State University, she became involved in every aspect of student life.  Wong has traveled to Peru (Picture 2) with the RSU Spanish club and to Spain (Picture 3)with the Honors Program and the President’s Leadership Class.

Cady Wong is especially supportive of the Honors Program at RSU.  The application for this program is online and the deadline is January.  Her scholarship paid for tuition, fees, book, food and housing for her full bachelor’s degree.  The Honors Program at Rogers State University is more than just academically successful students.  As a group, they travel and work as a community of scholars on a variety of volunteer projects on and off campus.

After an exceptionally successful four years at Sequoyah High School, Cadence Wong’s trips to Japan, Peru, and Spain have opened Cady’s eyes and imagination to an adventurous life.  She is currently a Junior at RSU and considering her next steps which include medical school and a 20-year stint in the Air Force.
